There have been big changes to the teaching of Mathematics this year and it has been important to keep our community in the loop about them.
We have begun to implement Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools’ (MACS) Vision for Instruction across our core curriculum, including in Mathematics.
Access to high-quality mathematics instruction can improve student attitudes towards mathematics and change trajectories of student outcomes and pathways. High-quality mathematics instruction is essential.
Parents are key partners in children’s learning, so it is important to ensure they know what is happening in learning spaces across the school.
We opened our doors to parents to allow them to see a Mathematics session in action and experience learning from the view of their child.
In the morning session, parents had the opportunity to encounter:
- Daily review
- Explicit teaching
- Gradual release
- Practice
Following the open morning, parents were invited to enter into a discussion about the learning and teaching of Mathematics with Mathematics Leader (and co-Deputy Principal) Melissa Evgeniadis. It was positive to hear the questions and comments made by parents following the session, showing their eagerness to partner with us in supporting their children’s learning.
At St James the Apostle Primary School, we implement a knowledge-rich, evidence-based teaching program designed to foster student growth and independence. We empower learners to thrive in an ever-evolving world by breaking down complex concepts into manageable learning outcomes. Through modelling, practice, and gradual release of support, students build confidence and mastery.
