Making reading magical for Book Week

There was a sense of magic in the air at St James as our learners celebrated CBCA Children’s Book Week 2024.

During each day of the week, learners got to participate in a range of fun book-related activities such as:

  • the Book emoji competition,
  • Guess What’s Under Mr R’s Hat and
  • a Unicorn hunt around the school.

Learners also read the shortlisted CBCA Book of the Year Awards books during English and Library sessions. They explored the storylines, themes, vocabulary and artwork within these books and responded to them in a variety of ways.

The Junior Learning Community cast their eyes (and wands) over the book One Little Duck by Katrina Germein and Danny Snell. After reading the text they had to choose a farm animal and write a page to add to the picture book using a similar text structure.

The week culminated in a Book Week Parade that was held in the Paulist Centre. It was great to see learners and staff dressed in their creative and imaginative costumes. The magic continued when Mr R and Joe stunned the whole school with their magical switcheroo trick! The shock in the Paulist Centre was palpable when Andrea unmasked Thelma the Unicorn to reveal that it was Joe pretending to be Mr R the whole time! Perhaps Joe and Mr R should audition for the Masked Singer, or maybe Mr R could be the Great Almighty Oz in the remake of the Wizard of Oz!

The final event of the week was the Open Afternoon in the Library. This gave families an opportunity to explore our school library with their children and read some books together. It was great to see so many learners so excited about our school library and reading!

We thank Mr R for organising all the book week events and hosting the parade. It was definitely a week to remember and was enjoyed by all!
